CARBON DIOXIDE MITIGATION FROM GREENHOUSE GASES IN ALGAL PHOTOSYNTHETIC SYSTEMS (ALGAE GHG)    



OBJECTIVES
  • Development of a demonstrative integrated photosynthetic system based on the sequestration of greenhouse gases (GHG) in algal biomass used as raw materials for value-added bioproducts.
  • Carbon dioxide mitigation from flue gas emissions of thermoelectric power plants using a new and clean technology for biological carbon sequestration in algal culture, which is 10-20 times more efficient than other terrestrial plants.
  • Contribution to the development of LIFE+ Environment Policy and Governance and the Sixth Environment Action Programme of the European Community 2002-2012, related to priority area of climate change to prevent global warming above 2°C, due to increasing of carbon dioxide emissions in the atmosphere.
  • Technological solutions for the value-added use of algal biomass in various applications, such as algal oil as an alternative source for biofuels and horticulture oils, as well as proteins for feed additives and spent algal biomass as plant biostimulants, fertilizers and soil enhancers.
  • Consolidating the knowledge base for better environmental governance by broadening stakeholder involvement, including environmental compliance of enterprises towards European rules for the installations underlying the Emission Trading Scheme with impact to climate changes, health and quality of life.
