Project objectives

Thematic area of the proposal is in the field of functional foods destinated to maintain human health, obtained from plants recently introduced in culture (including protected areas) in Romania, Momordica charantia and Passiflora incarnata. The project aims the development of multifunctional and innovative products for the plant protection and the concomitant stimulation of biologically-active compounds at safe levels and with reproducible biological effects. The two studied model plants have many beneficial effects on human health. M. charantia is recognized for its antidiabetical and antimutagenic activities and P. incarnata for its anxiolytic action. It has been demonstrated also the antidiabetic action of hydrosoluble fibres from Passiflora, as well as that of anxiolytic action of M. charantia alcoholic extracts.

The general project objective is developing multifunctional and innovative products for protection of nutraceutical plants, new introduced in Romania and concomitant stimulation of obtaining biologically-active compounds in plants, at safe level and with duplicable biological effects.

Specific project objectives are:
  • (i) Development of multifunctional products (a - products based on consortia of Trichoderma strains with controlled release in relation with environmental factors ("smart-delivered") for treatments in vegetation and in soil; b – products based on porous ceramics with controlled release in relation with environmental factors and with a high bioavailability of silica; c – products based on essential oils included in mesoporous silica with controlled release in relation with environmental factors ("smart-delivered") for phyllosphere treatment;
  • (ii) testing of products and their integration with sustainable agricultural technology of nutraceutical plants;
  • (iii) characterization of functional foods by in vitro alternative tests in human cell cultures and making evident the possible role in human cells of the silica forms accumulated in plants;
  • (iv) results exploitation by intellectual protection of innovative solutions after the techno-economical analysis of multifunctional foods and opportunities of exploiting.

Original and innovative contributions of the project

This project proposes for the first time to study interaction of silicon, Trichoderma and essential oils treatments, protection agents with multiple roles, which activates simultaneously plant defence response. It is the first proposal aiming the development of some products with applicability directly into practice, in which silicon is controlled released from supports, having concomitantly the functional role as a matrix, from which nutrients and volatile oils are smart-delivered, in this why pointing out the possibility of practical use of silicon in order to balance the main signalling pathways in plant defence response, integrated with elicitors for obtaining high productions with raised phytonutrients level.

The first characteristic of originality and innovative contribution of the project results from the integrated approach, which applies to the nutraceutical cropped plants products that have multiple functions, all complementary acting to ensure high yields with raised content of beneficial phytonutrients. The innovative contribution to the project is in terms of obtaining new multifunctional products. In the case of products based on consortia of Trichoderma strains with multiple roles a first innovative aspect is the high-efficient tests through the consortia strains will be selected.

In the case of other products, porous ceramics with nutrients and those with essential oils contained in the mesoporous silica, the innovative character is given, also, by their role in the release of soluble silicon for the root and foliar nutrition, respectively, which is rapidly absorbed by plants and balances the antagonism system pathways, ensuring stable productions and with a high content of beneficial phytonutrients.


Expected project results

The project results are multifunctional products. Products based on consortia of Trichoderma-strains will include strains with multiple role: (i) plant protection agents towards soil-borne necrotrophic phytopathogenic agents (Fusarium, Rhizoctonia, Sclerotinia, Pythium) and phyopathogens from the phyllosphere (Botrytis cinerea); (ii) elicitors of plant defence response, in particular through the production of volatile fungistatic compounds and with the role of inducing plant defence response, such as 6-pentyl-pyrones; (iii) limiting the negative effects of ethylene on the root system, through the production of ACC-deaminase, the enzyme that degrades the precursor of ethylene (ACC) from rhizosphere; (iv) increasing the utilization of nutrients and especially of nitrogen (including due to their cellulase activity).

Porous ceramics with nutrients will be applied as treatment to the soil and will function as a matrix for controlled release of some nutrients with high bioavailability for plants. The role of porous ceramics with nutrients is double: (i) to compensate the loss of metabolic energy (resulting from activation of the secondary metabolites synthesis) by providing nutrients that are available with low metabolic power consumption (ii) to furnish orthosilicates with high bioavailability for radicular nutrition.

Products based on essential oils (thymol) included in mesoporous silica have the functions as: (i) natural insecticides to reduce the insect attacks which can reduce the level of yields and may interfere with the expression of plant defence response; (ii) elicitors of plant defence response and (iii) suppliers of silicon forms with high bioavailability for foliar nutrition of treated plants.

The expected result through the implementation in practice of these multifunctional products is a save, efficient and affordable way to ensure high yields of nutraceutical crops with a raised content of active beneficial phytonutrients that maintain human health. The functionality of this expected result will be demonstrated for the model studied plants, but the model will be able to be extrapolated to other cropped plants to which the content of beneficial phytonutrients is important
