ABOUT the PROJECT
  • The main objective of the project was the obtainment of nanocomposites based on synthetic and natural polymers used as environmentally friendly packaging with controlled release of bioactive substances.
  • The new nanocomposites materials as single layer films based on low density polyethylene (LDPE) and natural layered silicate modified with different natural bioactive materials( as hydrolyzed collagen, starch or quebracho). Multilayer films were also obtained by deposition of bioactive collagen as solution or gel prepared by coupling with enzymes and antioxidants
  • These new bioactive polymer nanocomposites materials exhibit enhanced mechanical and thermal properties, hardness and reduced gas and water vapor permeability compared to the reference polymer. They will incur increased protection of food to mechanical impact as well as to thermal, chemical and microbiological exposure.
  • The usage of natural bioactive components affords recycling and increases the biointegration at the end of life cycle. Exposure tests indicate that the new polymeric materials degrade under weathering conditions in 1 year and 3 months compared to polyethylene that degrades no earlier than 4 years and 4 months.
  • The packaging materials, obtained as single and multilayer films and foils, were tested in contact with various food products, monitored along the validity period of 8 days, in storage conditions at 2 - 40C temperature and 75 - 80% relative humidity. The food products were physico-chemically analysed (protein, collagen, fat, NaCl, humidity, hydrolisable nitrogen) and biologically monitored (total number of germs and coli-type bacteria) throughout the storage period. The obtained results recommend the single and multilayer foils based on LDPE and modified natural layered silicate for food packaging only after checking their physico-mechanical properties that influence their behavior during packaging operations and subsequent thermal treatments.
