The research activity in the frame of the Project is based on the scientific and technical collaboration among 7 partners organized in a consortium with the aim of developing specific and interdisciplinary research activities.The great complexity degree of the Project resides in the interdisciplinary research activities that involves chemists, chemical-physicists, physicists, textile industry engineers, IT engineers. In the world, digital printing on paper or plastic sheets is a well established technology for graphics and art applications. It is the result of many years of research and of massive investments. Unfortunately, digital printing on textile support is a new domain giving rise to increased interest only in the last years. In Romania, this subject is original both from fundamental and applicative points of view: nano- technologies for ink preparations and digital printing on textile support

In this project we proposed :
  • conformity with the research areas of the FP 7:
    • nanoscience and nanomaterials topic: using the knowledge accumulated during elaboration of nanotechnologies meant to significantly improve the practical applicability of the colouring materials (dyes, specific inks) and consequently increasing their intrinsic value;
    • information technologies topic: the need of developing national visions of the future of technologies. In this way economical, technical and social benefits are expected. Within this context, the application of textile digital printing is expected to bring important benefits, both for the quality of the printed textiles, their originality (limited editions), their price and for the ecologic impact of the printing process by diminishing the toxicity of the printed clothes. At the same time, the application of textile digital printing process will lead to a fast and according to the customers’ requests (colour, printed design) delivering of textiles and clothes;
    • environment protection by the various pollutants emitted by different industries topic: the proposed textile digital printing process is desingned in such a manner to reduce the ecotoxicity degree according to the increasing stringent international regulations;
  • conformity to the new scientific and technological domains of EU for integrated technological platforms.
  • In the European research area there is a trend for reorganization of traditional industries, i.e. textiles and cloths, looking for new solutions and materials (with medical and technical applications), but also to the improvement of the technological and applicative characteristics. All these trends implies as well a diminishing of the production costs, a drastic reduction of the toxicity versus customer and the optimization of the applied techniques (dyeing, printing etc).
  • The goal of this proposed project is the achievement of a new complex, integrated system which rely on new knowledge and technologies in nanoscience area, for to obtain of nanomaterials (colorants/pigments, dispersant/ binders, resins and so on), meant for production of special inks which can be practically used on an digital inkjet printer in the textile industry.
  • The key to the right color, fastness and printer performance is the INK. The inks determine the characte- ristics of textile: the color, the fastness, the handle and the toxicological impact.
  • The key of the inks is the choice and the special processing of the colorant materials.
  • The goal of this project is to develop a set of inks for inkjet digital printers that allows printing on chemically diverse textile materials. For achievement of this goal, our research work rely on nanosciences and nanotechnologie, because it is desirable for preparation of inks, to use small particles of colorant materials and other ingredients, for maximum color strength. Moreover, these colorant materials will be micro/nano-dispersed and the range of useful particle size for inks, both of colorant materials and of other ingredientst must be of about 20 nm to about 200 nm.The inks must be good storage stability for long periods so as not clog an inkjet apparatus.
  • Our research is entirely based on the purchase of the laboratory equipment for digital ink-jet printing on textile support.
  • The end-users of the results of the project may be any SME with activity in textile industry.

    Main objective: the design and further promotion to the interested economical agents of a modern technical process for large scale textile digital printing.

    Measurable objectives are yearly structured as follows:

    Year 2005 (WP I)
    • technical and scientific backgrounds for: modern preparation paths for inks designed for textile digital printing, for synthesis and conditioning of raw materials (dyes/organic pigments, polymeric dispersants, natural surfactants), physico-chemical characterization, morphology and structure, ecotoxicity

    Year 2006 (WP II and III)
    • assessment of modern processes conditioning and/or synthesis for raw materials (colouring materials, polymeric dispersants, resins, surface tension adjusting agents ;
    • assessment of physico-chemical, colouristic and morphostructural characterization methods for the considered colouring materials and specific auxiliaries;
    • selection on the analytic characterization criteria of the optimal values and parameters for preparation of the raw materials with improved properties. Raw materials will be in the form of encapsuleted micro/ nanodispersions;
    • further purchasing of laboratory scale research equipments (i.e. device for textile digital printing);

    Year 2007 (WP IV and V)
    • assessment of the optimal preparation process for the inks (first class of inks) using methods characteristic to nanomaterials;
    • physico-chemical characterization, colouring properties, morphology and structure of the ink embedding liposomes;
    • assignment of the optimal preparation process for inks (second class of inks) containing last generation dispersants/binders and polymeric resins;
    • physico-chemical characterization of the two classes of inks by specific methods;
    • optimizing and selection of the optimal preparation path for the ink designed for textile digital printing;
    • preparation of batches of base colours inks;
    • setting of the laboratory-scale technology for textile digital printing ink preparation;

    Year 2008 (WP VI)
    • testing of the prepared inks for textile digital printing;
    • elaboration of a technical efficiency study. This study will contain elements proving the qualitative efficiency and ecological friendly characteristics of the preparation technique;
    • work-shops with the participation of the potential users of this technology, dedicated and demonstrating the functionality, applicability and advantages brought by the textile digital printing process;

    In any stage of the research, if it will be the case, the research team may:
    • write scientific papers and participate at the international/national symposia;
    • patent the results.
